Anatomy of a Senior Project

This part of the project will record my investigation much like a journal. Be sure to read the Preface to understand how this project got started.

An Overview of the Project's Development Process
Intending to research and construct this project almost entirely online in order to demonstrate a student's use of computer technology, I began the project making notes and compiling a table of potential resources using word processing software. Then, using Macromedia's Dreamweaver web page design software, a framework for the website was constructed based on the basic components of the project (the preface, introduction, four parts, etc.,) and I began publishing it to the WWW. As the research progressed, I simply began using Dreamweaver in place of the word processing software to gather notes, accumulate resources, and brainstorm, while occasionally returning to my original notes for guidance. Somewhere along the line, I started writing and fleshing out the project's framework. Once the project (and website) began to take shape, it took on a life of its own in the creative process, and slowly matured as I explored various avenues, gently guiding it based on decisions made with who-knows-what internal motivations, choosing this path and not that one.

Now, the way my mind works is that I kind of have ideas pop into my head, and the particular idea in this instance was for a website for kids. My children live with their mother in one of America's most comfortable counties. (Cobb county, Georgia. I call it "Newt's Country" after our former congressman Newt Gingrich.) A large swath of upscale middle-class Americana, conveniently turning Republican to safeguard their accumulating assets. Realizing that my three children, at the time in the 3rd, 6th, and what should have been 12th grades, were experiencing school very much like I had forty years ago, and knowing that microcomputers and the Internet were supposed to have revolutionized schools and the classroom (after all, I was in the information technology business a the very beginning of the personal computer era and have had computers as an intimate part of my life for the last twenty years,) I could not help but wonder, why have classrooms really not changed very much. Why are the schools of such a well-heeled community still technologically backward?

I had always thought my children's' schools and its denizens were very nice, and suppose I had just never stopped to think about it, but it certainly appears that little has changed in the classroom since my youth. Computers remain a novelty. The school projects they bring home are highly contrived and artificial, sometimes stupid, and certainly old-fashioned. So far, I've seen no focus on technology at all. Worse, I remember school, especially high school as boring and irrelevant. My children are even more "bored" and are less engaged than I was.

Yet, I am a turned-on learner now. I am convinced that much of this has to do with the technology. Yes, I have been known to go to the library for researching something, and it can be a pleasant experience. But it is also inconvenient and time consuming what with travel time and thumbing through books and scribbling notes then transcribing them into the computer. If all I had were the library and books, I know my ability and inclination to reach out and learn would be extremely abbreviated. The moral of the story is this: Technology unleashes knowledge. Period.

Technology can be used to engage children in lifelong learning. I firmly believe this. But what is the key? Perhaps I am not too bright, but I am smart enough to know that one's "impressions" of things are often severely disengaged from the facts. So, I created this project to investigate the status of computer technologies in the classroom, using the Internet as a focus.

Official letter clearing me to begin research. Started searching for definitions of the Internet, when the term was coined, and histories of the internet. Saved notes in MS Word files: Senior Project Workpaper for general notes and Senior Project Resources which was a table of resources, mostly URLs from the Internet.

July 7, 2000

Setup website. Began roughing in a couple of pages.
July 10, 2000
Continuing roughing out website. Restructured website to reflect the basic components of the project - Preface, Introduction, Parts 1-4, etc.
July 11, 2000
Discover two useful sites

Continued researching by following various links to formulate an overview of the subject matter and available resources.

Research at the NTIA website, and the Dept of Ed Website, and the R*Tec websites. Talked with Dr. Elizabeth Byrom at SERVE.

More research at two websites mentioned above. Intend to contact principals and participants in the Symposium to see where they stand and if there have been other such events.

As I dive into this project, I am finding that we are in fact moving fast to implement technology and the Internet into the classroom. To many, the benefits of this are a given, however there are critics.

Very fragmented efforts as this frontier is pioneered. I expect some consolidation. Our goals are unclear, our models are still being defined.

Conversation with Curt Cearley, and visited the sites he suggested, including the InTech site. Visited website discussing the success of education dot coms, suggested by my Contract Director. Searched AskERIC database for articles with the keywords "Internet," "K-12," and "classroom." Followed various links, including the Consortium of School Networking and the New York Times (requires free membership.)

July 26, 2000

Continued to review AskERIC articles for relevancy and to source. Surfed AskERIC Lesson Plans and Hot Topics for integrating technology into classrooms. Visited the The National Plan for Educational Technology, Encyclopedia of Educational Technology, the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) K-12 Practitioners' Circle and many other websites. Stepped back to review mounting information for further refinement of Senior Projects goals. Began reconfiguration of project, re-layout of website.

July 27, 2000

Continued re-layout of website, creating structure, began minor fill-in of Links. Reviewed resources gathered for brainstorming of outline that shows how my research developed and how the Internet and its attending issues to education developed. Collected many online resources for Part Two.

July 28, 2000

Reviewed yesterday's progress and cleaned up. Continued to review online resources and literature, and brainstorm. Accumulate more resources & literature.
This project is almost organizing itself, with a little coaxing from me. Have laid out a basic structure of the website based on my project components, and have begun to fill the web pages with my brainstorming and accumulated resources from the Internet. Am using the site itself to help keep track of the abundant resources and the flow of work.
